With the objective to improve the life of single mother Rukumani a/p Palanisamy , SICB members helped to purchase a low cost apartment for RM35,000 through our fund raiser “Rangoli” and fast tracking her application through the good office of the then YB Komala Krishnamoorthy (MP of Kapar), an ex-Soroptimist member.
On 9th July 2002, a new chapter began for Rukumani,( a mother of three kids with one diagnosed with nose cancer), when she signed the ownership documents for her low-cost apartment situated in Taman Sentosa, Klang.
SICB members visited her to supervise her progress and motivate her as well. Rukumani ventured into tea stall business. However, we lost her after a while only to locate her finally through the developer of her apartment.
She had lost her cancer stricken daughter. Realising Rukumani’s backlog on payment towards her apartment, SICB members made frequent visits monitoring and advising her on her finances. Our constant persuasion also saw her daughter receive her identity card and is now gainfully employed in the same company her mother works. Her son is currently a car mechanic.
On 8 May 2016, with the transfer of strata title ownership from Dynasty United to Rukumani, our 14 years’ commitment to this single mum comes to a close. As a fitting parting, we mentored her in simple financial planning, counselled her on her EPF and will nomination and be mindful of her responsibility to settle all outstanding bills. Que sera sera.
